What is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

People often confuse Medicaid and Medicare, two federal programs with similar sounding names. Both programs are insurance programs operated by the federal government. While they are two separate programs, one agency, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), runs them both.

What is the main difference?

The main difference between the two is that they serve different individuals. Medicare is primarily targeted towards people 65 and up, people with certain disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. Medicaid provides healthcare to people with low incomes and uninsured children.
