It helps keep you top of mind even when a buyer isn’t in market yet. Forbes Communications Council is an invitation-only community for executives in successful public relations, media strategy, creative and advertising agencies. With this in mind, I believe companies and their executives would be wise to turn up the thought leadership dial in their B2B marketing strategy moving forward.

After 500+ interviews on the Predictable B2B Success podcast and working with funded B2B tech founders on their content strategy, I have mapped the pattern. After working with dozens of funded B2B tech founders on their content strategy, I have found that the best-performing thought leadership consistently scores well on six dimensions. Audience targeting by job title, company size, seniority level, and industry ensures your thought leadership reaches the specific buying committee members you aim to influence, not a broad content audience. This approach has a dramatically higher ROI than promoting untested new content cold. Put $200–$500 behind it, targeting your ICP, and it reaches ten times the audience with content that has already been validated.

If you’re talking to manufacturing managers, focus on manufacturing-related issues. Great thought leadership focuses on solving real problems. Good thought leadership is more than sharing an opinion. This content might not be directly sales-focused, but it does build relationships and trust—and those relationships are the foundation of future sales. Effective thought leadership is a powerful tool for attracting the right kind of leads. Thought leadership gives you the chance to prove that your company isn’t just a product or service provider—it’s a trusted advisor that truly understands their needs.

Insight #5: The Future of Thought Leadership Is People-Powered

The best thought-leadership content earns attention by delivering utility. That proximity to real-world problems makes their ideas feel timely, relevant, and grounded in action. A story-rich insight may shine in a podcast or video.

Build a social media presence.

  • Our community of 215,000+ content marketers shares camaraderie and conversation.
  • Your thought leadership plan is simply the strategic plan you create in order to execute the tactic of thought leadership marketing.
  • For instance, a cybersecurity company might use content marketing to teach readers how to prevent data breaches, while thought leadership would explore the future of digital trust or the ethical use of AI in security.
  • Based in the stunning Okanagan Valley, Chris balances his passion for scaling organizations with family adventures, mountain biking, and volleyball.

Another seven in 10 decision-makers say they are “very likely” to think more positively about organizations that consistently produce high-quality thought leadership. AI may be the oxygen in the room, but it’s your people, your processes, and your portfolio of experiences that form the lungs. When done right, ABM forces marketing and sales to align on who matters most and then create experiences for them that feel less like campaigns and more like conversations. That’s why the marketers who win will be brave enough to create experiences worth showing up for.

ABM and ABX create personal experiences for the win

ABM and ABX reward maturity, alignment, shared definitions, integrated data, and cross-functional orchestration — all things that large organizations should have in abundance. When it comes to experiences, enterprise teams aren’t dabbling; they’re building capability. In large organizations, good data governance isn’t just the best practice; it’s the only way to keep gravity from turning valuable data into an unmovable mess. While enterprise organizations are better governed, they also encounter bigger challenges when that governance meets reality.

Sona, a workforce management software for Social Care, is a great example of thought leadership content done well. As with any B2B strategy, once it’s been working for a bit, you’ll want to measure and see how it’s doing. Focus on meeting and producing high-relevance and quality content and you’re looking at a successful thought leadership strategy. Quality should always be prioritized over quantity–especially in thought leadership content.

And, just like people, your brand has its own voice that’s influenced by the industry where it operates, the people behind the company, or the audience you want to reach. In fact, 47% of buyers say that most thought leadership content does not appear to be created with their specific needs in mind. The most mature thought leadership strategies are integrated and multichannel, reaching audiences through original research, collaborative videos, roundtables and interviews, media coverage, digital and in-person interactions.

Over 1,000 B2B marketers reveal what they’re doing with and without AI, the impact of their programs, and their plans for next year. B2B companies are often very conservative, with layers of review and approval producing bland campaigns. Because Google holds LinkedIn in high esteem and sends searchers there more often than it does to other social media platforms, it’s a treasure trove for search engine optimized content. This is accessible through their LinkedIn profile—not through corporate videos or overly crafted messages, but authentic opinions and perspectives shared via text, videos and images that stick out and connect. Thought leadership helps a B2B leader build their brand as a subject matter expert and educator—not as a salesperson or representative of their company. This applies to all businesses, regardless of whether they are B2B or B2C—at the end of the day, it’s all H2H (human-to-human)!

In Bloomberg (paywall), Dambisa Moyo writes that executives “must be prepared to lead not only in business, but also in society.” To reach this pinnacle, a company doesn't just need to succeed with its primary deliverables. While many B2B companies and brands offer high-quality goods or services, only a few of them will become thought leaders.

When & Why You Should Consider a B2B Thought Leadership Initiative

Concentrating on specific themes allows you to build a deep, recognizable voice in your niche—one that buyers turn to when those challenges arise. For instance, a financial advisory firm might focus on succession planning and risk management, while a software provider could lead conversations around automation and data-driven decision-making. This focus not only sharpens your message but also makes your insights more actionable and memorable. Knowing your audience also means understanding where they spend their time—whether on LinkedIn, in industry webinars, or through niche podcasts—and showing up there consistently with content that educates, inspires, and builds trust.
